ABOUT YOGA

Yoga is an ancient science of self-knowledge and understanding. Through many different practices one can directly experience their own essence and goodness. The Tantric philosophy regards everything as sacred and all our experience as that of the Divine experiencing itself. In this way we are all Spirit showing itself in endless variation and beauty. The practice of yoga allows us to cultivate our connection to all the life around us and explore our own unique expression of this life. Anusara Yoga is based in this philosophy.

Anusara means "going with the flow", "flowing with Grace", "following your heart". Anusara Yoga is a hatha yoga system that integrates specific principles of bodily alignment with a celebration of the heart. We set the foundation of our practice with the Universal Principles of Alignment. These principles allow us to find the natural flow for our body both structurally and energetically. We use organic forms such as loops and spirals to bring our bodies into a more optimal place of freedom and power. These principles are tools to understand our bodies and patterns of moving and with that knowledge move towards greater balance and ease. Through the asanas (poses) we align ourselves with the flow of nature and find them both dynamic and open.

When we open ourselves to the larger flow of nature that surrounds us we acknowledge that we are part of something much greater than our individual selves. That deeper flow encourages us to grow and change, to align ourselves with the Divine. Seeing our connection to all around us allows us to connect with ourselves more deeply. Our yoga practice is a celebration of our innate goodness and beauty. When we align our body and cleanse our minds we make space for the abundance of the present moment.

Anusara Yoga is community based and so we welcome all people to join us. We all have the ability to grow and heal and learn from each other. Our community is as much a part of our yoga practice as the asanas. I welcome you to join us on this powerful road to joy, power, acceptance and peace.

We open our yoga practice by invoking blessings and support for our practice through chanting the Anusara Invocation. To read and hear this beautiful Sanskrit chant click here.
